BEACH CITY Every morning, as she begins another new day, LaWanna Rine, of the Beach City area, writes a spiritual Love Letter in her notebook. Over the years, she has filled many notebooks with these Love Letters which share her innermost thoughts and stress her love and concern for others. One day she hopes to publish a book featuring her Love Letters.
LaWanna, who is 90, is an Iridologist. Iridology is an alternative medicine technique in which patterns, colors, and other characteristics of the Iris are examined to determine information about the patient's systemic health. She also is an Herbalist, teaches nutrition, and does massage therapy and yoga.
She is also an ordained minister of the Temple of Radiant Lights.
LaWanna said she read an article about eyes and doctors diagnosing illnesses through the eyes that appeared Dec. 28 on The Times-Reporter's Senior page, and it sparked her interest. She said the right eye tells what is happening on the right side of the body from head to foot while the left eye tells about functions in the brain, ear, lung, circulation, and digestion system.
"Iridologists are trained to suggest ways of changing your life to live a healthy, happy life," said LaWanna. "Too many people focus on growing old and being crippled with old age."
LaWanna suggested the importance of a healthy diet, which she said should include fresh vegetables, fruits and healthy nuts (no peanuts.) "Focus on Love and Light and bless your eyes," she said.
"Spend each day focusing on your Being, a Being of Light. Then you are lighting up your world," suggests LaWanna.
For more than 40 years, LaWanna operated Lotus Lodge, which was located outside of Strasburg. Her favorite colors are purple and gold which are evident throughout her wardrobe and home. She loves to burn candles, which she said, send Love, Healing and God's Light.
LaWanna explained that purple is God's greatest color. Each day has its own color:
Sunday's color is blue, which shows God's will and strength.
Monday is yellow, showing God's wisdom and power.
Tuesday's color is pink, showing God's divine love.
Wednesday is white as in the ascension and resurrection.
Thursday is emerald green, showing God's strength, prosperity and health.
Friday is ruby and gold, indicating peace, happiness, love, healing.
Saturday is purple, which is God's favorite healing color.
As each day approaches and the color changes, she only focuses on that color for that particular day.
LaWanna uses an indoor trampoline every day. She said it is the healthiest exercise for seniors. She encourages senior citizens to walk backwards which activates the brain and uses muscles in the back of the legs to strengthen their legs.
According to LaWanna, people should shake their bodies and lift their hands in the air for additional exercise.
She has taught yoga on television and at Kent State University. She wrote a book in 1999 titled "Success and Prosperity of the Soul”.
"I am not retired," said LaWanna. "I use my house for me. I love my dogs, stuffed animals, flowers and candles. I never feel alone. I also love to drive."
LaWanna grew up on a 200-acre farm during The Great Depression. She later moved to Akron, Ohio. She has a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Janet Rine, who reside in Pennsylvania, and a daughter Zoe Rhine, who resides with her partner, Brenda Murphree, in North Carolina. She also has granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
"I always tell everyone to 'Go With Love’,” said LaWanna. “That is what I live by.”
